Today I recommend: #Famous by Jilly Gagnon.
In this modern day love story: Girl likes boy. Girl snaps photo and posts it online. Boy becomes insta-famous. When Rachel’s picture of crush Kyle goes viral, it sparks a whirlwind adventure of Internet fame that forces both Rachel and Kyle to question whether fame and love are worth the price. Told from alternating points of view, #famous captures the sometimes-crazy thrill ride of social media and the equally messy but wonderful moments of liking someone in real life.
This book felt timely. Everyone has seen or read about someone who becomes famous due to some viral post or picture. #Famous explores the idea of sudden fame from two perspectives and addresses both the excitement that can come from fame as well as the bullying and fear. The consequences feel realistic, especially the differences in the ways that Kyle and Rachel are treated, which helps with a plot that is otherwise quite light. This is a fast-paced read with short chapters and lots of drama – perfect if you are looking for a quick YA romance.
