Today I recommend: Samurai Rising: The Epic Life of Minamoto Yoshitsune by Pamela S. Turner.
This book documents the true story of the legendary samurai who was raised in the household of the enemies who killed his father before being sent to live in a monastery where, against the odds, he learned and perfected his fighting skills.
This was a fascinating nonfiction book – it read more like a narrative and was full of action, death, and descriptions of violence. I didn’t know much about samurai before reading this and was really happy to see that the book included references and a bibliography at the end so that I can learn a little more. Also enjoyable are the inclusion of illustrations that really capture the drama of the story. This book would be an excellent choice for anyone who likes historical nonfiction or has an interest in samurai.
